"Goblin Market" is a costume project by Julia Winkhardt, brought to life as a music video. As a set designer, I created the glamorous Goblin Camp and the cozy living room of the sisters Lizzie and Laura.
Christina Rossetti’s poem initially appears to tell a classic story of good versus evil. It follows the sisters Lizzie and Laura, who lead a peaceful life until Laura succumbs to the temptations of the Goblins and their alluring fruits one evening. This event turns their lives upside down, with Lizzie desperately trying to save her sister. On closer inspection, however, the poem reveals deeper layers: it is a plea for solidarity among women, a subtle protest against patriarchal structures, and a passionate call for self-determination and freedom.
The Goblin Camp was inspired by the Vanitas theme of baroque still-life paintings, juxtaposing youth and transience. The vibrant fruits symbolize physical temptations, while dice, playing cards, and colorful liquids represent indulgence and hedonism – behaviors that, during Rossetti’s time, were considered especially scandalous for women.
As the story unfolds, Laura's downfall is mirrored in the setting: while she indulges at the lavish buffet, it begins to decay. What was once vivid and enticing ultimately lies desolate and broken.
The sisters’ living room is set outdoors with no boundaries, creating an ethereal and carefree atmosphere. Its pastel tones contrast with the rich, saturated colors of the Goblin Camp.
